MARIO SCHIFANO AND THE ARTISTS OF PIAZZA DEL POPOLO

During his stay in Gibellina in the spring of 1984, Mario Schifano (1934-1998) created a series of large-format paintings. His motifs from the late 1970s, characterised by rapid and expressive freedom—wheat fields and water lilies, as seen in his homage to Monet—were infused with the influences of the Sicilian landscape, offering a new vision of the Mediterranean horizon. “Acquatico” is part of an eleven-piece series created in Gibellina. Together with Tano Festa, Franco Angeli, and Mambor, shown here, the artist gave life to the Piazza del Popolo group in the 1960s.
